Google+ – Everybody’s in a Circle

Google+ has us in circles

It’s funny how the best ideas are so simple. When we talk about the semantic web, we’re talking about categorization. Every webpage, every word, every subject belongs in a given category. Google has taken this a step further with Google+ and with this rethinking of the old model, they are now categorizing the people we know.

The concept really isn’t all that complicated. It’s taking something we’ve been doing for years – categorizing people – and just making it more intuitive. The drag-and-drop mechanism is pretty cool. Rather than checkboxes and dragging from a list on the left to a list on the right, you’re now dragging from the top of the page to the bottom – into a circle rather than a list.

It really is the same thing as what’s been done for many years. But, Google’s new spin on it is gaining popularity, and they’ve mastered the viral marketing aspect of it this time around. Google Buzz was… a buzz kill. But + has hope.
